«I didn’t take any very interesting pictures until maybe the third or fourth year at university, when I started doing self-portraits – weird stuff.
‘I’d cut up meat and place it on my body, or I’d find dead animals on the street, road-kill, and bring them home and do weird things with them, like put them between my legs. A bit Gothic.’
Why self-portraits? ‘It’s usually the male gaze, and the woman is the object to be looked at. So the idea was becoming the person who objectifies, but also objectifying myself. I just thought it was interesting to play the dual role.
‘I like myself, but it’s not a love story to myself when I’m doing self-portraits. They are more a rejection of this nice normal life you’re supposed to lead.
‘I’m proving to myself that I can dress up in strange outfits and wigs all day and photograph myself, that I don’t need to get a job in an office and spend 40 hours per week wishing I was somewhere else.»
